MASTERTON BAND

BRIGHTER PROSPECTS Masterton, May 22. The experience of a difficult year when, at times, it appeared impossible to carry on was reported at the annual meeting last night of the Masterton Municipal Band. Through the scarcity of employment many members had had to leave the town, and it was only the tenacity of a few members that had kept the band going. Unfortunately, too, Mr. J. Noble, the conductor, had decided that he could not continue in office. At the end of 1926 the membership roll was 38. Of these 29 had resigned and 17 had left Masterton. However, it was pleasing to know that the prospects for the future pointed to better things. Mr. R. J. Young had taken over the conductorship and the present roll was 26 members. Greater interest was being taken both by the bandsmen and the public. Old members had again joined up, and a strong team of lads was under tuition. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £Bl, with, an excess in assets over liabilities of £lO6l.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Sergeant, Mr. L. A. Askew; treasurer, Mr. IV. G. Lamb; auditor, Mr. IV. Jiigo; secretary, Mr. B. Rickard; committee, Messrs. L. Pearson, J. Cosgrove, R. Harrison, and R. Gray. It was decided that during the winter Sunday concerts be given in the Opera House.
