MR. J. B. CALLAN, SENR.
Dominion Special Service.
Dunedin, April 20. The death of Mr. John Bartholomew Callan, sen., to-day, removed from the ranks of the ? lde T r g eu .« atl °? p of the practitioners in Duneom one of the few surviving members. The late Mr. Callan w.as born in Dublin in 1844, and at the age of came to Victoria, where, he entered the Civil Service. He studied at the Melbourne University, and after taking his B.A. and LL.B, degrees was admitted as a member of the Victorian Bar in 1876 He then retired from the Civil Service, and in 1876 came to Dunedin, where he practised his profession until 1883, when he entered into partnership with Mr. J. M. Gallaway He retired from active business in 1.106, and a year later was elected as a mem ber of 3 the Legislative Council, on which he held a seat until 1914. The late Mr. Callan was a keen volunteer and during the war scare ot 1885 he raised and commanded the Irish Rifles, being promoted to the rank of major two years later. He was also lieutenant-colon.il in —d of the Otago Battalion from 1895 to 18.1 b. H was elected to the Dunedin Licensing Committee in 1889, nad served on this bodv until 1890, during which year he held the office of chairman. For some years he was president of the Otago Law Society, and was for a time the Speaker in the now defunct Dunedin Parliamentary Union. He is survived by a son Mr. J. B. Callan, senior partner in the firm of Callan and Gallaway, solicitors, Dunedin, and a daughter.
