Dr. Franklyn Kidd, of the Cambridge Law Temperature Research Station, who is to present a report to the Government on cold storage problems in New Zealand, left Wellington yesterday for Hastings, where he will inspect the orchards and cold stores. Dr. Kidd is accompanied bv Dr. E. Marsden, Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and Mr. R. Waters, of the Department of Agriculture. The general secretary of the Australian Baptist Foreign Mission (the Rev. J. C. Martin) arrived yesterday by the Makura from Sydney. He will attend the annual conference of the Baptist Union of New Zealand. Commander C. G. Tonge, a Government official of the Nyasaland Protectorate, Central Africa’, arrived from Sydney by the Makura yesterday on eight months’ furlough. He was accompanied by Mrs. Tonge. Formerly a commander in the Royal Naval Re serve, he was, at the outbreak of the war, sent from England to take command of a vessel on Lake Nyassa which the British Government had seized. He now holds the position of marine superintendent of the fleet of steamers maintained by the Protectorate Government on the lake. Commander ’Tonge lias visited New Zealand on several previous occasions.
Commissioner Hay and Brigadier Scotuey, of the Salvation Army, are on a visit to Auckland, where they are engaged on a property extension proposal.
