A SHUNTER’S DEATH

SLIPPED OFF WAGON BRAKE

Dominion Special Service.

Christchurch, October 10.

That no blame was attachable to anyone, death being due to paralysis of the respiratory muscles and injuries to the back, the result of a shunting accident last Tuesday, was the verdict given by the Coroner (Mr. H. P. Lawry) at the inquest on Leonard John Hayman this morning. Hayman received injuries while engaged in shunting operations at 1.45 a.m. on October 4, and died in the hospital on Thursday. Evidence was given that Hayman was missed during shunting operations, and two other shunters, on hearing a moan, investigated and found him under the axle of a wagon. He had a grip on a side chain hook, but was clear of the rails. On being freed Hayman was asked if he felt hurt, and replied: “No; but my legs are all numb and I think they are off.” On being reassured that his legs were all right Hayman seemed more at ease. He told one of his rescuers that he had slipped off the leading brake.
