SERIOUS MOTOR SMASH

WELLINGTON RESIDENTS INJURED Dominion Special Service. v Christchurch, October 10. A young man and two young women were injured—one seriously—when the motor-car in which they were travelling collided with a tramway pole in Page’s Road late on Saturday night. The occupants of the car and the nature of their injuries were as follow;— Edna Tunk, aged twenty-one years, of 38 Charlotte Avenue, Brooklyn, Wellington—cuts, bruises, aud severe shock. Edna Taylor, aged twenty years, of 11 Dickens Street, Addington—bruises and shock. John Andrews, aged twentyfour, of Collins Street, Lower Hutt—minor cuts and bruises. The car, a five-seater sedan, was being driven by Andrews towards New Brighton, and at the time of the accident was approaching a tram stop in Page’s Road. Two boys stepped out to cross to a tramcar when one of the passengers in the motor apparently became alarmed at the possibility of an accident, and grabbed the steering wheel, causing the motor-car to swerve into a tram pole at the roadside. The impact was so severe that the whole left side was practically torn out, and the body of the car wrecked. Considering the battered state of the car generally, the occupants were lucky that they were not killed.

Both girls were dazed by the smash, and were removed to Christchurch Hospital. Miss Taylor was treated and discharged, but Miss Tunk is still a patient there. Her condition to-day was reported to be satisfactory. Andrews escaped with a few facial cuts. Miss Tunk and Andrews had only arrived at Christchurch from Wellington on t Saturday morning.
