For the four machines be received £l2 ss. The detective added that bicycles were easy to steal, and it was difficult to detect the thief. Mr. Currie asked for leniency. He would think the matter over and accused could remain in custody until to-morrow morning. A Wanganui resident who works at opossum trapping during the winter months states that last season, in the Wanganui district it was what might be termed a lean year, and he considers that it would be advisable to cease trapping for at least a season. As an example, he stated that he trapped more opossums in the Palmerston district in four days than he trapped in Wanganui in two weeks. The popularity of golf must have been evident to all who saw the final of the Wanganui championship on Saturday afternoon, when about 500 spectators followed the finalists over the Belmont course. During the three days it was found necessary to have a man .on “point” duty marshalling the cars into the parking place. On Saturday Over 100 cars were lined up. Moderately heavy seas have been experienced on the coast during the weekend owing to a blustering north-west wind. The motor ship Inaha, on her way from Wellington to I’atea, was compelled to put into Wanganui for shelter on Saturday owing to the heavy weather.
The new headquarters of the Victoria I/cague recently acquired in St. Hill Street (the Returned Soldiers’ Club) were officially opened this afternoon. There was a large attendance of members at the. opening ceremony.
