CRICKET IN AUSTRALIA
SHEFFIELD SHIELD VICTORIA v. QUEENSLAND (Rec. December 21/9.5 p.m.) Melbourne, December 21. In the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland, Victoria in. the first innings, made 533 (King. 50). Benstead took two wickets for 70, and Oxenham four for 125. The weather was fine and the wicket good. King, the University colt, handled the bowling with freedom. The other batsmen were easily disposed of. R. Oxenham’s performance with the ball was most meritorious, as he was suffering from a lame leg, owing to an injury suffered in the Sydney match. (Rec. Queensland in the second innings had five wickets down for 123 when stumps were drawn (O’Connor 38, Rowe not out 19, Mayes not out .16). ' The visitors, with a big deficit to make up and facing accurate bowling, batted carefully, runs coming very slowly. O’Connor played a resolute innings’ in an attempt to hold his side together. (Queensland scored 147 in the first innings). SOJJTH AUSTRALIA v. NEW SOUTH WALES (Rcc. December 21, 11.35 p.m.) Adelaide, December 21. In the Sheffield Shield, South Australia, in the second innings, made 286 (Alexander 104, Pritchard 27, Grimmett 36). McNamee took four wickets for 69, Mailey two for 90, and McQuirk three for 20. ' New South Wales, in the second innings, has lost , two wickets for ; 174 (Phillips 34/Andrews not out 69, Kippax not out 37). . The weather was fine and the wicket wearing well. Pritchard failed to add to bis overnight score, giving an easy catch off the first ball he received. Alexander, the other overnight not out, with the assistance of Grimmett, slowIv (mostly bv singles) reached his century just’ before lunch. On resuming he added four when Ratcliffe dismissed him bv a smart catch. He had batted four hours. 'McQuirk and McNamee, backed up by keen fielding, made short work of the tail-enders. New South Wales made the pace merry from the jump in their second strike, and Andrews and Kippax were going great guns when time was called.
