AMERICAN NAVY

CRUISER STRENGTH TO BE PRACTICALLY DOUBLED

A MOST SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT

By Telegraph.—Press association COPYRIGHT.

London, December 20.

Commenting on the Bill providing for the construction of ten American cruisers of the most powerful type, the "Daily News’ ” naval correspondent says “The American cruiser strength will thereby be practically doubled. Coming on top of President Coolidge’s recent declaration that in no circumstances would he sanction competitive warship building, this development is most significant and can only mean that the United States has decided that if further growth of naval armaments cannot be checked by negotiation, its own naw shall be extended until it reaches the 5-5-3 ratio fixed bv the Washington Treaty, not merely in battleships, but in every type of craft. The Bill is undoubtedly a. retort to the British Admiralty’s policy, aiming at supremacy in cruisers.” —Sydney “Sun” Cable.
