BASIC WAGE
DISCONTENT IN AUSTRALIAN LABOUR UNION CIRCLES GRAVE CRISIS LIKELY Bt Telegraph.— press association. COPYRIGHTSydney, December 16. In connection with Mr. A. B. Piddington’s basic wage finding, the employers’ representative on the Industrial Commission had suggested a basic wage of £3 18s. fid, and the employees’ representative £6 10s. M. - . Piddington awarded £4 45., the existing basic wage (Rec. December 16, 7.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 16. Mr. Piddington’s basic wage decision has caused widespread discontent in Labour union circles, where a substantial rise bad been anticipated. It is stated on their behalf that already, in expectation of an increased wage, the cost of living had risen, the employers in many cases greatly increased the price of their goods. The more militant section of Labour is advocating a strike as a protest against the finding. (Rec. December 16, 11.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 16. A meeting of trade union secretaries consndered the basic wage declaration. No effort was made to disguise the fact that it is likely to create a very grave industrial crisis. The meeting adjourned without deciding what action should be taken.
