CHRISTMAS TRADE
PROSPECTS IN DUNEDIN i )>,'.!■ ' ’■t” r ('IAI. Dunedin, December 11. Asked whether th e Christmas . trade this vear was likely to be brisk, a Dunedin merchant replied that the Christmas demands made very little difference in his trade, excepting in hams and a few other lines. Muscatels, canned pineapple, almonds, and other things, which were Christmas luxuries twenty-five years ago in ordinary homes, are now wanted right through the year. What could be said about the provision trade was that orders are coming in steadily without indications of studied economy in shopping. The jewellers, the proprietors of fanev goods emporiums, the drapers, and the booksellers are amongst the retailers, who, in these davs, have booms at Chrisfiuastide. There is never much of a boom in things to eat, and, correspondingly, there is seldom a depression.
