BAD ROADS IN MAKARA COUNTY

Sir, —Re your article on bad roads on Saturday, April 3, I am sure you have, earned the gratitude of the large majority of residents of the Makara County, in giving publicity to the neglected and most disgraceful state of our roads. Since the petition has been circulated a large proportion of the ratepayers of Paparangi and Newlands have asked to be included in the petition, as they also are ratepayers to the Makara Council, and their roads are on a par with those of the Hawtrey. It is high time the council woke up to the fact that by their neglect they are losing a number of settlers who would be paying rates, but will not buy property on account of the"condition of the roads over which they would travel daily. This also reflects back on to the present ratepaj’ers, because the more ratepayers there are in the district the ‘more rates the council would collect. Also, the more the less rates there would be to pay individually. Your article states: “The council intended widening the roads after the main highways had been put in order.” Is that another promise to catch votes for the forthcoming loan ? The council made some such promise just prior to the poll being taken for the Hutt road loan, and nothing has been done. No, Sir, we say, "A the loan is worth two roads . promised after,” to say nothing of footpaths.— I am, etc., MAKARA RATEPAYER.
