NOT ELIGIBLE
AUSTRIAN MEDICAL MIGRANTS
Some months ago news was received in Wellington that the Austrian authorities desired to learu under what legal conditions Austrian medical men were permitted to practice as doctors in the British Empire, and what openings, if any, existed for them. In the communication received here the questions applied to the position in New Zealand and Samoa.
The matter was subsequently taken up 4>y the local branch of The British Medical Association, and at a meeting of the council a resolution, viewing with alarm the suggestion that Austrian doctors should be allowed to practice in New Zealand, was passed. Such an introduction was considered contrary to the Medical Practitioners Act of New Zealand, and it was pointed out that there was no reciprocity as tegarded medical practice between the Dominion and Austria. A rcplv lias been forwarded to the Austrian authorities, that Austrian medical practitioners holding Austrian medical qualifications are at present ineligible for registration in New Zealand, and, therefore, cannot enter this country for the purpose of practising their profession. The position in regard to Samoa is identically the same.
