FIRE IN THE CITY

OUTBREAK AT ALBERT HOTEL At 11 o’clock last night a passer-by observed smoke issuing in volumes from a chimney of the Albert Hotel, at the corner of Willis and Boulcoti Streets. He broke the alarm nearby and a motor-reel from the Central Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene. The brigadesmen burst open the side door of the large sitting-room on the first floor on the Boulcott Street side _of the building and found flames inside the chimney above the gas-fire. The outbreak was promptly suppressed by one hose and a hand chemical extinguishei. An examination showed that the gasfire had caused the ignition of woodwork inside the lower portion of the chimney, which is nnlined. The strange circumstance was that three persons who were conversing in the room were unaware of the outbreak until the brigadesmen battered at the door. Very little damage was caused by fire or water. A large crowd, inclndinp manv sailors of the American -warships, congregaFefl at the scene. Shortly after 12 o’clock yesterday a fire broke out in the six-roomed house of Frank .Tames McOnarrie. situated at No. 45 Hohirire Road. Hataitai. A kitchen and bedroom were damasred.
