RONA BAY BEACH

PROTECTION OF FORESHORE i ENGINEER’S REPORT Messrs. R. W. Holmes and Sou, engineers, who were employed to inquire into the best means of protecting the foreshore south of Rona Bay wharf, reported to the Eastbourne Borough Council at its meeting last night, and recommended that the method of protection by groyns should be adopted, as they would give the maximum of protection for the least expenditure. They suggested that seven timber groynes be constructed along tl.e foreshore at the Kiosk Point, at perpendicular distances apart of 100 feet and about 60 feet in length These grovnes would prevent further erosion taking place, and would trap a certain quantity of sand as it travelled along the beach. By careful watching and manipulation of the groynes the engineers could see no reason why the Kiosk Point should not be extended so that increased slicltei was afforded the Rona Bay wharf from southerly seas. They did not recommend that any repairs be undertaken to the concrete wall where it had been breached, as they considered that ample protection would be afforded bv the. grovnes. It had to be clearly understood that the raising of the beach entirely depended on the quantity of sand drifting along the beacn from Pencarrow, but judging (thev said) from the extent of the accretions that had formed in the last 20 tears, appreciable results should be cbtawted in a short period of time. The engineers stated that under moderate conditions they estimated the cost of electing the groynes to be £-25-2. The report was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
