LATE PRIME MINISTER
EX-COLLEAGUE’S TRIBUTE
The Hon. D. 11. Guthrie, ALP., who was for seven years a member of Air. Alassey’s Cabinet as Alinister of Lands, and for a time held the portfolio of Railways, yesterday paid a striking tribute to his late chief’s memory. “In the death cf the Right Hon. Mr. Massey,” said Air. Guthrie, "the Empire has lost a statesman of no mean capacity; the Dominion a Prime Alinister Avho through strike, war, and slump successfully conducted its affairs; the Reform Party, a leader of exceptional ability; and all those who knew him, a personal friend. ■ There Avere those qualities in the character of Air. Alassey which drew to him respect, esteem, and affection, and these, combined with that rare attribute, a natural ability as a leader of men, eventually placed him in the high positions which he so honourably filled, whether as Leader of the Opposition, Prime Alinister of this Dominion, or representative in the Councils of Empire, his work bespoke the humanitarian, the student, and the statesman. The Avorld lias paid him tribute—what more need be said? As a friend and colleague I deeply mourn his death, and join with all in an expression of sincere sympathy with Airs. Alasscv and family.”
