TEMPERANCE IN BRITAIN
PROGRESS OF THE MOVEMENT. London, Juno 2. Viscount Astor, in his presidential address at the Temperance Convention which was attended by delegates from all parts of tho Empire, at Caxton Hall, AVcstminster, said that politicians were still shy of advocating temperance too boldly, possibly because of the direct and indirect methods of intimidation practised by the liquor trade. Nevertheless, it was a good omen that many trade candidates were rejected at the general election, while temperance leaders were generally successful.- —Reuter.
