OUT OF QUARANTINE
, . THE S.S. SUSSEX TO BE RELEASED THIS MORNING The steamer Sussex, which has been in quarantine in Wellington harbour for some days past on account of the occurrence of a case of smallpox (the patient having been landed at Thursday Island), will be released to-day, and will berth and land her passengers. Th'e Minister of Health (Sir Maui Pomare) stated yesterday that by tomorrow all persons on board will have completed the maximum incubation period for' smallpox—the period in wh'ch any other cases would have been revealed if anyone on board had been infected. The bedding of the patient removed at Thursday Island had been destroyed by burning before the departure of the vessel from Thursday Island, and the quarters occupied by him had been thoroughly disinfected. Vaccination bad been performed three times upon all on board, with the exception of one memlier of thb crew who reacted after the first operation. . All on board were well, and all articles considered or suspected to be infected had been disinfected by an officer of the Health ’ Department. In view of tho time that had elapsed and of all the precautions taken, it was proposed to release the vessel from quarantine this morning. CORNSACKS HELD UP URGENT!'Y NEEDED FOR HARVEST IN SOUTH.
