NEW SOUTH WALES’ CHAMPIONSHIPS. Sydney, January 17. The struggle between Charlton and Arne Borg in the State . swimming championships, attracted five thousand spectators, and hundreds were unable to obtain admission. It was generally considered that the Swede would _ win the shorter event. At the end of’ the first lap of the hundred metres race he was leading by three vards, but Charlton overtook the visitor midway in the second lap and, after a stirring neck to neck fight, drew away and won by a yard and a half. The winner clipped 2 2-ssec. off the Australian record established last January by W. Harris, the Hawaiian swimmer. Arne Borg equalled Harris’s time. During the evening F. W. Bayldon, of Sydney University, brolte the furlong breaststroke Australian record, defeating the holder (R. Chalmers) in 3mm. 13 3-ssec. At Manly, a team of five swimmers broke this 500 yards flying squadron Tecord by two seconds, the time being 4min. 56 4-ssec. —Press Assn. MORE RECORDS BROKEN By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 17. At the Parnell Swimming Club’s carnival at the tepid baths, J. Enwright won the 220 yards provincial championship in 2min. 38sec. Miss Piri Page swam 75 vards in 50 3-ssep., breaking Miss V. Walrond’s intermediate record of 51sec. L. Kronfeld covered a hundred yards in a handicap event in 59 2-ssec. —two-fifths of a second bettor than his own record. BATCHELOR BREAKS HIS 100 METRES RECORD. Batchelor covered 100 metres in 68sec., beating by two seconds his previous record for the distance.
