JAPANESE CRUISERS
, VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND No official confirmation has been received subsequent to the earthquake of the visit of Japanese cruisers to New Zealand waters, which it was intended should be made in February. The three ships named in the first official dispatch were the Asana, Iwate, and Yakumo. Details of the vessels are given below: — Asana. —Built in Germany, March, 1898; complement, 648; length, 442 ft.; beam, 671 ft.; draught, 24Jft.; guns, four 8-inch, fourteen 6-inch, twelve 12-pounders, four submerged, 18-inch torpedo tubes; armament, 7in.; designed horse-power, 18,000. The Asana was badly damaged on the Pacific coast of Central America in December, 1914. Iwate. —Built at Elswick, 1900; length. 400 ft.; 9750 tons; complement, 658; beam, 68Jft.; draught, 241 ft-; guns, four 8-inch, fourteen 6-inch, twelve 12-pounders; four submerged topedo tubes. 16,000 h.p.; 21.74 knots. Yakumo.—Complement, 698 ; length, 390 ft.: beam, 641 ft-.; draught, 235 ft.; four 8-inch guns, twelve 6-inch, sixteen 12-pounders, four torpedo tubes, 15,500 h.p.; 20} knots.
