CONTROL OF TRAFFIC
NO CONSTABLE AT COURTENAY PLACE.
“It seems to be a somewhat haphazard business as to whether there is a constable on point duty at the Courtenay Place junction,” writes “Citizen.” “I happened to be passing there at 5 o’clock on Friday evening, when tlmro was a Infect whirl of traffic from all quarters. Hundreds of people were dodging across the street; motor-cars by the dozen- dashed across from Courtenay Place to Kent Terrace,, and across the open square from Oriental Bay and Majoribanks Street; six or eight trams were discharging and taking in passengers, making a scene of bustle and excitement. I looked for ths usual constable on duty in the centre of the square, but could not see any man in blue. Breaches of the rule of the road at this point could have been made with'• impunity, at a risk to life and limb, for we know that the presence of a constable or traffic officer of some kind is the only means of making many motorists keep to the rules, especially when the traffic is as congested as it was last evening.
