SOUTH ISLAND TRADE
DIRECT OVERSEAS SERVICE WANTED. BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. Christchurch, April 11. At a meeting of the executive .of the Canterbury Progress League to-night the organiser said that the question of securing a direct overseas steamer communication for the South Island should be taken* up with all southern organisations. The present time was opportune, for the existing subsidy arrangements for the San Francisco and Vancouver mail services would terminate in March next, and. freightrates would come up for review in Julv next. ’ Mr. E. H. Jules, president of -the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, said that at present South Island importers were heavily handicapped hr reason of transhipment charges. Without shipping facilities , there was no encouragement t-o promote the exports and imports of the South Island. South Island members of Parliament should all be approached with strong representations on the matter, for he believed that the question would ultimately have to bo settled by Parliament. A select committee was set up to go into the matter.
