ANCIENT CARTHAGE
WORK OF AMERICAN EXPLORERS REMAINS OF SUCCESSIVE GENERATIONS By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright. London, April 6. The Paris correspondent of “'ffhe Times” states that ancient Carthage is now being explored. Americana have unearthed 65, buildings, and have found fine stones, Punic emblems and pottery specimens. The most striking discovery is a fountain of a thousand vases of water feeding a reservoir from which the Carthaginian boats drew their fresh water supplies. Fine statues were also found, reflecting tho influence of Greek and Egyptian art. The theatre of Carthage yielded 20 statues, including a fine Apollo. Roman villas with mosaic floors were discovered. The successive inundations of different civilisations were indicated by the fact that the ruins of Roman buildings stand on Punic sites, while the ruins of Christian churches are mute witnesses to the defeat of that civilisation. The Basilica of St. Cyprian was uncovered, with bas-reliefs, capitols, and pillars ornamented with figures of animals- The church appears to have been built above older pagan buildings.—“ The Times.”
