IMMIGRATION
A LABOUR COUNCIL’S VIEWS. BY Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, April 6. The secretary of the Otago Labour Council has been instructed to forward to the Government a statement of the council’s views respecting the suggested activities of the Government’s immigration nolicy. The council resolved: “That the employers’ replies to the Government inqjiiry as to tho shortage of labour in 1921 were at complete variance with the actual position ; that a policy which induces people to immigrate under false, misleading promises with a hope of rbtaining a plentitude of employment must result in great economic loss and industrial distress; that the skilled and semi-skilled industries at Dunedin are overstaffed for many months of each year.” Other resolutions refer to the lack of a housing scheme to meet immigration, and suggest that if employers desire additional workers they should be responsible, and that unless employers guarantee employment for two years under a bond of £2OO per annum per male and £lOO per female for the additional number they state is necessary, workers should not be encouraged to immigrate.
