THE MAYORALTY
NO CANDIDATURE YET WITHDRAWN nominations” clqse on APRIL -16 • * “The civic elections are drawing near. The non-Labour Mayoral candidates have now only ten days left in which to make an arrangement (if any arrangement is possible) for all but one of their number to withdraw in favour of a straight-out contest m the representative of official Labour. Immediately before Easter tlw three non-Labour candidates, supported by representatives of their committees, met.a citizens’ committee m confer Xe to endeavour once more to arrive at a compromise. There was some very straight talk on this occasion particularly with regard to the attitude of one candidate v.ho, alter do ing heckled, retorted that he had tee invited to discuss the position, not to £'cross-examined by counsel. The conference, after and a half, dispersed without getting Aid Board (14) close with the Chiet Aid Board i ) j ame s Ames) Returning- Officer (Air. , 6 at noon on Monday next, April 1 -
MR. WRIGHT AT SEATOUN finance’ and”the OUTLYING DISTRICTS . Interesting remarks about the needs Mayor,' i" •» "fW?,*" lto el “- in need of a groat many necessary services, said Mr. Wright. A deputation waited on the council quite recently, and brought forward a most formidable list; he could not say, however, that any of them were of an sary character. He expressed the hope that the council in framing its estimates for the coming year, would at least be able to . c prry ?ut the more important suggestions of the deputation It was quite correct that there were practically no footpaths in many o the streets of Seatoun. as well as Miramar. The only thing tho council could do would bo to carry out each year a certain proportion of footpatn Work, so that, in a reasonable time, the needs of the district could be met. Lighting facilities in Seatoun also left much to be desired. As he had already, explained, the lighting committee of the City Council were going to bring down a most exhaustive report, with reference to the lighting of the whole district; it was expected that reforms would be introduced in this direction. With reference to the duplication of the tramway track at present being constructed in Rongotai Terrace, it was anticipated that there would be about 800 fept of new track, which would certainly give relief to travellers who wore compelled to wait at certain times.. The question of' continuing the duplication to the Miramar function would have to be very seriously considered, because of the necessity, which would arise from the increasedtraffic on the line. The proposed road from Lyall Bay to Seatoun, by thp seashore, had been the subject of negotiations with property • owners affected, who were of course aware that they would be expected to subsidise tho project substantially. He believed the owners concerned would b’e quite reasonable in regard to this matter, and give material financial assistance to this road, which would complete one of the finest marine drives in the Dominion, connecting Seatoun and the intervening bays with the heart of the city.
