PRIVATE RESIDENCES VISITED. Hard upon the nows of the safedosti'oyings at an Island Bay store and. the Westport Coal Company’s offices, comes tho inforroatron that two places at Hataitai were visited quite recently during tho absence of the owners. In ono instance the lock of an < ut-, house was -wrenched oft’, presumably by someone who was under the impression that the door would admit to the house, which it did not. Nothing was reported missing, and it is 'thought that the intruder was disturbed. Tn another instance in the same locality a stranger was seen to dash into a'hedge and get away just as the lady of tho house was arriving homo. No loss or damage was re--ported.
