CROWBAR USED ON DOOR
WOULD-BE BURGLAR FOILED A very determined but unsuccessful attempt to break into the premises occupied by the Auckland Patriotic Association was made one evening last week (reports the “Herald”). When the staff arrived at /the office the following morning their notice was attracted to .several marks upon the door, evidently made by a large crowbar. The door is a. double one, joining in the centre, where it is secured by a Yale lock. Tho marks were in the central division, and in places they were quite deeply indented and the surface of the timber broken. When the door was opened it was at once seen how persistent the efforts of the would-be burglar had been. The indented marks were to bo seen from top to bottom of the woodwork and even along the base of the door. In the immediate vicinity of tho lock tho atempts to force an entrance had been particularly desjierate, as shown by the depth of the impression. It is considered that the affair was really an attempt to gain admittance to the premises of the Auckland Savings Bank, which arc directly at the rear of the Patriotic Association’s offices. Once insido the latter, any person bound upon such an errand would merely need to force two more doors, whereupon he would find himself in an open passage-way leading through the yard direotl.v to the bank building. It is quite evident ths attempted burglary was the work of someone acquainted with the locality, and also with a knowledge of tho movement of the police.
