LICENSING COMMITTEE ELECTION
HALF HOLIDAY NOT COMPULSORY It has been stated publicly that a compulsory half-holiday for shops, etc., will be observed to-morrow, it being the day of the licensing committee election. On referring the matter to the secretary of the Labour Department (Mr. RowleyL a Dominion representative was 'informed that, so far as shops, etc., were concerned, it is not a compulsory half-holiday, although Mr. Rowley did not express an opinion on tho closing of hotels. As a matter of fact, the Licensing Act clearly provides that it shall be unlawful to sell intoxicating liquors between noon and 7 p.m. on the day of the election, but there is no provision otherwise for the closing of hotels, as is the case on Sundays.
