PATRIOTIC FUNDS
MANAWATU SOCIETY. From Our Own Corresnondent. Palmerston North,'September 18. For some time past correspondence has been going on between the Under-Secre-tary for Internal Affairs, representing the War Council, and the Manawatu Patriotic Society as to the disposition of moneys held by the latter. The council demanded that the whole of the money left in hand should be paid over to it to administer, but this the society deelined to'~<ta, and notified Its intention of retaining the surplus for distribution amongst wounded returned soldiers in its own district. The allowing reply has now been received from the Under jSecretary for Internal Affairs: — "Wellington, September 14. 1321. Sir.— Ee the report of the sub-committee of the Manawatu Patriotic Society, incorporated iii connection with the proposed distribution of stole and wounded funds — I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of tho 13tK instant enclosing the excerpts in connection with the report, which has boon most carefully reviewed. I regret, however, that the text of the report at no stage makes it clear ns to tho method proposed to be adopted in connection with the distribution, and that generally it does not supply details in a sufficiently definite form to permit «f the scheme being submitted to rhe Solicitor-General for opinion as to its legality. A number of important points arise which it would be yery difficult tn deal with by correspondence, and. it therefore appears desirable that a conference should bo arranged between your sub-committee and the acting-officer-fn-chargo of the funds with a view to reducing the matter to a concrete and definite proposal which can at once be submitted to the Solicitor-General. I shall therefore bo obliged if you will let mo know when it will suit your executive to call the sub-committee together for tho purpOfje, and I shall bo glad to arrange for the attendance of Mr._ Davies nt Palmerston North. —T am, otic.. J. Hislop, Under-Secretary." It has been arranged that Mr. Dav ire shall again meet the Manawatu Patriotic Association on Tuesday afternoon next to discuss the matter further.
