— ® THE WELLINGTON CLUB. A oommittes meeting of the Wellington Chess Club was held on August 2, when Mr., A. W. Gyles was appointed a member of the New Zealand Adjudication Board to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation (for health reasons) of Mr. R. J. Barnes. A letter was received from the Otago Chess Club suggesting that the annual telegraphic match be played on September 3 and 10. It was decided to accept these dates, subject/to a who being available. The club’s B team (first eight players barred) plays tho Ngaio Club a fifteen a-side match on Saturday next at 7 p.m. An early start is necessary owing to the cut that has just been made in the railway timetable. Better progress is being mado in the club’s championship tourney now that Mr. A. W. Gyles has returned from a business visit to the South Island, and Mr. Purclias has returned from a trip to Sydney. The best scores to date are as follow: —E. A. Hicks, 5 wins, no losses; Barnes, 3—o: Kelling, 5 —2; W. E. Mason, 4— W. White, 2 J —2|; S. Faulkner, 2— 2; G. P. Anderson, 1—0; and A. W. Gyles, I—l.1 —1. In the club’s 1921 handicap tournament tho 'best tallies are now as follow rGylos, sen., 85—J; E. S. Taylor, 9—l; A. L. Lawson, 7 —2 E. A. Hicks, 7—3; H. Jessup, 9 —4 A. E. Jessup, 6—3; L. Sim, 5 — 2; D. Bruton, 5 —3; Barnes, ij —1|; A. S. T. Butler, 4J—IJ: W. White, 7J—4';; Foully, jun., 4—2; Wring. 5—5; C. Dryden, 4 —4; Mrs. Gyles, 3 —3; and Crandle, 3— / WORKINGMEN'S CLUB. The scores of those competitors who have bo far won half or more of their games are as follow: —C. T. Edmunds, 12 wins, 3 losses; H. M. Rosenberg, 10—4; J. Burgoss, 6—l; H. M. Ashe, 9J—-SJ; D. Bruton, s—l: F. H. Ryan, 5—3; J. Coulter, 5—5; and W. J. Fairburn, o—6. Each competitor has to account for 19 games. TELEGRAPH MATCHES. The Auckland v. Otago match ended in a tie—B games each. The Masterton and Oamaru clubs each scored a ona-point win from the Otago Club. In the Nelson v. Oamaru match eight games out of twelve are marked incomplete, and are being adjudicated on. In toe NelsonOtago match no less than nine games out of fifteen have been reserved for adjudication. Tho Masterton v. Palmerston North aud Masterton v. Canterbury matches, which wero to have taken place last month, have been postponed till later in tho season. The Nelson, v. Canterbury fixture is scheduled to commence next' Saturday. The 1866 conteet between these clubs is generally concodotl to bo ths first telegraphic match played in the Southern Hemisphere.
