CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP ( On Saturday next the 5-mlle Dominion cross-country championship will be fought out at the Hutt Park racecourse. This race should be well worth watching, and as it is twice round a 2J-milo course, spectators should have «. good view Of tho event. The Wellington team was chosen after the provincial championship held on August 6, the team selected being; Moore (Olympic Harriers), Todd, Bell, and Barclay (Brooklyn Harrfers), and Scatehord (Olympic Harriers). Otago its sending up a strong team, including Frye (last year a individual champion), and that fine runner Beatson, and they have good hopes of securing Rhe championship banner that they lost to Wellington last year. The composition of Canterbury’s team i fl not yet known, while it is understood that Auckland will not bo represented. However, a keen struggle may bo looked for between Otago and Wellington, while several runners outside the teams will fra making strenuous efforts for individual honours. A reception will be accorded the visiting teams at Dustin's rooms in Cuba Street after the match. BROOKLYN HARRIERS. At the invitation of Miss ■ Manley, tbs weekly run of the Brooklyn harriers was held, from her residence at Brooklyn. Ths trail led over ths hills to Happy Valley, dosrti towards the eea for about a mile, and then up the hills on the other side. At this stage a turn was made, and proceeding along the ridge in a northerly direction for eom® distance, the course dropped down into Happy Valley again, thence home. A 220 yards race at tho finish resulted in T. Collins, F. 6. Hill, and F. Harlen gaining places in that order. Smellle. Poutawera, end Todd, who were conceding generous starts, made the race very interesting by the way they broke through the pack but found the distance a little too short to overcome their handicaps. After the run, tea was provided for the runners and supporters by Miss Manley, who has always taken a great Interest in harriers. Apart from the three men selected to represent the province in the Dominion championships at the Hutt Park next Saturday, the following club members will compete individually: C. Dentice, P. Harvey, F. Harlen, and J. Futter. f SCOTTISH HARRIERS. .
The Scottish Harriers held a 8-mile ladies’ bracelet handicap at I,yall Baj on Saturday, some fifteen runners facing the starter (Mr. C. Goad). The course followed the beach for a mile then struck off in a northerly direction to the golf house, the return being via the sewer reserve and Onepu Road. The handicaps were on the generous side, A. Pago on scratch, conceding starts up to five and, a half minutes. E. Day nnd R. Mentiplay were in the lead after the first mile had been negotiated, the former eventually drawing out and winning easily by over a hundred yards ’.I. C. Souness was the next man home. He wag closely challenged by J. KnowlesSmith. The full result was as follows: E. Day, 4min. 40sec., 1; J. C. Souness. 2min. lOsec., 2; J. Knowles-Smith, Imin. sflsec., 3. Tho winner, Day, has been a consftt= ent tFyor throughout the season, and thoroughly deserves this his first success, for his perseverance. Page, from scratch, ran a very fast race, but the handicaps were too much for him.
