MIGRATION PROBLEM
SCHEME TO RELIEVE BRITAIN OF IDLE MILLIONS AND PROVIDE AUSTRALIA WITH WORKERS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. June 8, 5.5 p.m.) London, Juno 7. The “Morning Post,” in a leader on the Imperial Conference, states: “The migration problem is most urgent to Britain because unemployment is most serious. No country can permanently support an able-bodied population in enforced idleness. No doubt tho surplus population totals millions. All the schemes to relieve unemployment have failed, therefore the surplus must be disposed of. Australia requires lit, courageous workers —and is entitled to the right of selection' —on the vast territories awaiting road and rail builders, and farmers, and these can only be provided by an immigration scheme on a hitherto unknown scale. Men are available, but the necessity is funds. Emigrants can pay little now, but could gradually repay advances. If Australia grants land to pioneers, the necessary money for the passage and outfit advance could be provided by an Imperial reproductive loan. There would be absolute. security and no better investment for the Empire.”—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
