RECEPTION TO A RETURNED SINGER. Although the weather without was wet and drear, the conditions were warm and bright in the Town Hall Concert Chamber yesterday afternoon, when the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) and Mayoress tendered a welcome reception to Miss Adelaide Van Staveren,"daughter of the' Rev. H. Van Staveren, who has returned to WelJing'dorf after /perfecting' herself as a Eland opera artist in Italy and England. Miss Van Staveren had been well known to Wellington for her vocal and social activitus ueibre she went to the Old Country, and they had all known that Bhe was well endowed with those faculties which engendered success. Not only had her talent been recognised in England. v but she had made an impression in Germany and Italy, and it would be their privilege to hear her sing here in the near future. Mr. Luke referred to the disposition and temperament of Miss Van Staveren as virtues which had helped to win her success abroad. • But for .the war she . would. have returned 'to Wellington,: long ago,, but during- that trying time she had not hesitated to - .
