TEACHERS' GRADING SCHEME

rtTHE INCIDENCE OP PERSONALITY.

• Various features of the new grading , Scheme were discussed at last night's ' meeting of the Wellington branch of the .New Zealand Education Institute. Reference was made by -tho chairman •• (Mr. C. N. Hnslarn) to' tho very small .proportion of marks proposed to bo ■awarded for scholastic attainments. .According to Mr. A. Ballnchey, it was :«t the utmost importance that the profession should be given a half-mark as ;were law-and medicine, and lie suggested that the institute should agitate for ; the institution of a suitable university i degree. Mr. Ballachey added that personality, for which the greatest proportion of marks was to be allowed, was exceedingly difficult to assess. ~.Mr. W. H. Poster said that he agreed _.Tmlv tho previous speaker touching personality. In assessing personality a dif.hculty was created in that one always judged another's personality by one's own. "Even amongst some of unbosom friends," added Mr. Poster, "I would not like, to assess their personality, and meet them afterwards, at any late." (Laughter.) After further discussion the following resolution was adopted on the motion of Mr. Ballachey:— I fc> ; !' Tha j ; this branch of the New Zealand Education Institute, while ■ approving of an earned quota as embodied in the proposed new grading scheme, is eniphati, cally of opinion that it is undesirable to depart so radically in other particulars from the scheme now in force. It is of the opinion that merely to change the character of the existing quota is all that is at present desirable. It specially condemns the small proportion of marks allotted to attainments and the excessively large proportion given to personality.'
