THE WOOL DEAL
LORD DERBY'S ALLEGED COMMENTS. A somewhat surprising statement WM credited to Lord Derby by a cable message published yesterday morning. It was 6tated that in the course of negotiations between New Zealand and the Mother Country for the sale of New Zealand wool, Lord Derby, as one of the negotiators for tho British Government, showed extreme annoyance with the demand on behalf of New Zealand for a 55 per cent, advance on pre-war values. It will he remembered that at the time the negotiations were in progress Sir. Massey was in England, and ho represented New Zealand there in the negotiations. Mr. Massey was asked yesterday whether anything of the sort'published had been said by Lord Derby. Mr. Massey said (that ho had never heard anything of tho sort, and he had been present at tho negotiatioais. In. actual fact, the bargain had been, concluded not by Lord Derby, but by Mr. l!onar Law, who was acting instead of Lord Derby for that occasion. He ''as quite sure that the statement published did an injustice to Lord Derby and to the Dominion. .
