STEAMER ON FIRE
MANAROA REACHES TIMARU ' IN DISTRESS > CREW FIGHTS FLAMES AIL YESTERDAY By Telegraph—Preta Association, Timaru, June 17. The 6mall steamer Manaroa, 800 tons cross, left Dunedin for Lyttelton and Westport ut G p.m. on Wednesday with a full cargo of general merchandise. At C.30 o'clock this morning she was found to lmvo a fire in tho 'midship 'hold. Tho crow fought the fire nil day, and, failing to subdue it, the master (Captain Johnston) made for Timaru as the nearest port. The arrived liere at 7 p.m., and the fire brigade was sent for to assist in fighting the flames. A large quantity of water was poured into the hold, but the firo was still burning at 11 p.m. This was the Manaroa's first trip after refitting 1 , and Captain Johnston's first trip,in her.
