MANUFACTURE IN NEW ZEALAND URGED. One of tho matters brought to tho notice of the Parliamentary party on tho West Coast (says a Press Association telegram from. Greymouth) was t the question of the advisability of making paper from wood pulp in that distnct, ana Mr. Lynch, president of the Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that large areas of timber were available from Otira downwards towards tho coast, quite unsuitable for commercial milling timber, biit suitable for paper-making, and h® urged that the time was opportune when practical steps should be taken to provide tho nenessary plant for making pulp for conversion into paper,'particularly in view of ttie shortage of paper. A number of years ago areas were taken up with this object in view,. but so litt o encouragement was given in the Dominion that practically nothing furthei had been done. Conditions had materially altered, so much so that what at ono time might have bwn speculative was now a suro industry. He suggested that tho Government should assist either direotly or by subsidising pnvato enterprise! and he estimated the capital nccessarv at but that was a small sum compared with what the Dominion has to- pay: outside supplier for paper. He was glad Sir George Eenmck had taken tho matter up.
