DEPARTMENTAL PICNIC

Tho staff of the district office of the Lands Department held its annual picnic on the banks of the Akatarawa Stream on Saturday afternoon. The party was conveyed to the picnic ground in two motor-buses and on arrival was served with luncheon. Afterwards an onslaught was made on the blackberries, and the miscellaneous collection of utensils procured by the picnickers were soon filled. During the afternoon a sports programme was cone through. The prizes for the various events were presented by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Mr. G. H. M. M'Cluve. The outing was pronounced to be easily the most enjoyable yet held by the office.

The following were winners of the sports event's:—

Ladies' Race. oOvds —Miss Andrews, Staff Race Handicap, lOOvds.—Mr. Wratt.

Three-legged Race, 60yds.—First hent: Messrs. Compton and Watt. Second heat: Messrs. Wratt and Martin. Final: Messrs. Wratt and Martin.

Staff Veterans' Race, 60yds.—Mr M'Clure.

Pickaback Race, 30yds—Messrs. Mitchell and Nicol.«on, ridden by the Misses Bannister, tVncl heat. • '

Standing Three Jumps.—Mr. Nicholson.

Wheelbarrow Race.—Messrs. Wratt and Martin.
