MILITARY SERVICE
GOVERNMENT BILL COMING RUMOUR OF REDUCTION OF AGE II; has been freely rumoured ( in tho lobbies lately that the Government have a Bill on the stocks which provides that the military age for active service abroad shall bo reduced from 20 to 19 or even IS years of ago. Yesterday afternoon a Dominion representative asked Sir .lames Allen, Minister of Defence, whether tho rumour ivas correct or not, but the Minister refused to make any statement. In tho House of Representatives yesterday Mr. M'Combs asked tho minister whether it was a fact that the Government, in order to try and avoid the cost of sending married men to the front, intended to postpone the calling up of tho Second Division by conscripting- boys of 18 or I!) years of age. "The honourable member will receivo all tho information, when the Bill comes before the House," replied Sir James Allen. Tho Prime Minister informed a Dominion reporter yesterday that a Bill is being prepared embodying various amendments to Hip Military Service Act, but he stated thai: it had not yet been dealt with by Cabinet. He refused to state -whether or not there was any provision relating to tho lowering of tho military-ago limit.
