There are further improved train and tram services to-<lay, which largely coped with tho rush of workers towards tho city. With better manned staffs business is brisker. Tho- extent of sympathy with tho strikers will not be known till towards the end of the week. Heavy drafts of country police have been brought to tho city. Tho Chamber of Manufacturers has de. cided to support the Government, even to closing down factories if necessary. The Farmers' and Settlers' Association is solidly behind tho Government, and has offered to supply any labour required. ■
NORTHERN COLLIERIES CLOSING DOWN. Sydney, August 7. Tho secretary of the Coal Shale Employees' Federation states that ho has received information from Newcastle that the whole of tho northern collieries will close down oil W«dnesday. OVERSEA VESSELS HELD UP. Melbourne, August 8. Owing to tho wharf labourers' decision ■not to load foodstuffs, all oversea vessels are held up.
