FACING THE INEVITABLE.
STRIKE CALLED OFF. The Federation of Labour delegates havo faced the inevitable, and have called the 1913 strike olf. On December 13 it was stated in. !I'hk Dominion that tho Federation had decided upon conditional proposals in connection with settling tlie strike. Oil that dato tho following, paragraph appeared the seamen decide to go back to work it is stated that the Federation of Labour will seriously coneider tho question of 'allowing' the transport workers to resume. The striko will then be confined'- only to the miners."
This is exactly what lias happened, and tlie announcement was made exactly ono week later. Regarding the miners, however, it is understood that a way is being paved for a settlement of their dispute that all tho coal-miners in Now Zealand will be at. work again at tho beginning of tlio'New Year. ,'Regarding the announcement that the strike has' been called oft', this was decided upon by a mass meeting of con-' siderably over 1000 strikers, which was J:eld in the Skating Kink on Saturday morning. Tho meeting lasted for two hours, and it is understood that tho proposal to call tho strike off was carried by, n five to three majority.
From what could be gathered, a considerable number of ex-strikers arc going to apply for work on the wharves this morning. It- is stated that- the ivork of squaring, up things will take some days. Several of tho officials of tho old Watersiders' "Union, who were against the' strike at the beginning, havo liolped on Distress Committees, otc., and it will bo somo littlo time before they will bo able to seek employment.
Mr. C. A' 15. Ptird.v, secretary of the Wharf Labourers'- Union, has issued tjio following oflioial lioticp concerning the houseboat .Mararoa and X shed TjoartTinghouse:—"S.S. Mararoa and X storo will bp closed as from Tuesday morning, December 23. No bods will be supplied after Monday nigbt .(to-nightl and jneals to cease after breakfast on Tuesday morning (to-morrow). All bags and luggage >o be- away before 5 p.m. pn Tuesday, December 23."
