GET BACK TO THE SHIPS.

IDVICE TO LYTTELTON SEAMEN. (lijr TeleirraDh.—Pross Association.! Cliristchurch, December 21. Tho principal topic of conversation at Lyttelton to-day was the decision of tho seamen and firemen to return to work. The decision arrived at yesterday did not occasion a great deal of surprise. It is the opinion that now tho seamen have decided to turn to tho waterside n-orkors will also resume, some time next week. Work on the waterfront, although impeded to some extent by wind 4nd rain, was being carried .out as Briskly as .usual. -

A largely-attended meeting of seamen mid (ircmcn-was held this morning to discuss the position of the men regarding the manning of ships, as far as the nun ashore at Lyttelton are concerned. Most of them were paid off by the TTiiion Company when they saw no 'chance of (he wntersiders working tho vessels, and. to keep together, a large number of them went to the encampment at May's Koad. A telegram was received from Mr. W. T.. Young stating that he had been advised tliat tho men ut Lyttelton ware reluctant to resume work, and advising them to get back to. thoir ships' 'as. soon as tjioy could. The meeting decided /' that the men should resume at once, and notification was sent to the men,at the encampment, tvho were signed off tho Karamu. that the vessel .would .sail to-day, and that they could .resume their positions at Diiee. _ No,-difficulty is anticinated ill manning the Knramu. which is carrying a, lai'!"j of food-stuffs to the Coast, and- which is to sail this afternoon. P.egarding the hundred special constables - still, on duty in Lyttelton, whose period of service will lie completed at the end of the present month. It is_ considered unlikely that they will rerjuire to be re-swoni. Present indications point to a likelihood of the strike being over very shortly, and, in anv case, if the seamen return to work it is not thought that there «vll bo any necessity for the services of the special constables.
