VOLCANIC ERUPTION.

IN THE TONGAN GROUP. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, October IG. The Union Steam Ship Compfluy received a cablegram from Suva to-day transmitting a wireless message from the Tofno that the island of Nimifou was in eruption. Niuafou is a small island in the Tcngan group, and has,a native population of about 200, while there are probably about six white people on it. Steamers only call there to exchange mails, which are conveyed to and from vessels by native swimmers. A volcanic eruption took place in the island about 1887, when the centre caved in, and what was formerly high land subsided and formed a largo lake.
