Between sixty and seventy farineTs assembled to-day to discuss with General Godley the question as to the. best time of tho year for military camps. General Godley being indisposed at C'nristclmrch, Colonel Heard attended in his stead. The conference lasted some time. To this it was objected as uufoir to young men in their Christmas holidays, and it would mako tho camps unpopular. October was suggested, and a vote was taken, with tho following result:—Christmas, G; October, 19; autumn, 15 (April or May). Many did not vote, and tho leading farmers voted for autumn. Colonel Heard offered a concession to country regiments (including mixed town and country) to dispense with most of the evening parades, which were troublesome to country men, in return for lengthening tho period of camp from nino to fifteen days, and a. parado every two months. This was almost unanimously approved, there being only two or three dissentients. Colonel Heard will report the result of tho conference to General Godley.
