Mr. Alexander Sutherland, a v.ell known resident of Auckland, died Maidenly un Monday while walking in Nelson Street, his death being due to heart failure. Mr. Sutherland, who was in his 71th Tear, arrived in New Zealand in ISfil). and for many years was engaged iu building and contracting on a large scale. Among tile undertakings completed by liiiu were tho Itobson Street Wharf and part of tho Queen Street Wharf. Ho was a Freemason, and occupied high rank in the craft. Mr. Sutherland was married in 1877, and leaves a widow.

The .Rev. Father Daniel O'Shea, who left New Zealand for Ireland in May last, died on October 7 at tho residence of his brother, parish priest at Killmallock, County Limerick, leather O'Shea, who had been in ill-health for somo time prior to his departure from New Zealand, had been stationed, whilo in this country, at Waipawa, Takapau, Hawcra, Kaponga, and Danncvirke.

Mr. A. G. Barrett, confidential clerk to the Wellington Harbour Board, was la.-it night appointed by the board tc (jie position of acting-treasurer and assistant secretary, shortly to bo vacated by Mr. V.Caeheinaiile, who is leaving the board's service. The hoard also took occasion to place on record its appreciation of the faithful service rendered by Mr. Cachomaillc (luring tho eleven years for which ho had been an ofliccr of the board.
