'When the galo was at its worst a tiro got a hold lu sonic grass on the other side of Itcwa, and swept rapidly before tho wind ovor towards Waituna, eating up grass and fences.' One settler (Mr. AUerman) had great difficulty in getting his sheep out of tho line of fire. Tie was, however, assisted by neighbours. The devastation extended over a range of fivo mile?, and Waituna West was enveloped in smoke. Fortunately at this stage tho wind dropped, and rain fell, effectively stopping tlie progress of the firo.
