Romance is to bo found cvep in industrial schools (says the Auckland "Herald"), and the police investigations into a girl's oscapo from one of theso institutions has been brought to a close, owing to tho fact that tho girl lias married since her escape, and is now living happily with her husband. The girl in question, who was 17 years of age, was an mmale of the Mount Albert Industrial School. She was put out to licensed service, but absconded from her employers early in March of this year. All attempts made by the police to locate the girl were unavailing until last Saturday, when her whereabouts were discovered bv Constable Ilammerly. The constable found that tlio girl had married la.st month. Sho was taken to tho home where she bad recently been an inninto. but the manager having no jurisdiction over her ui. account of her marriage, sho was allowed to depart.

A. deputation representing tho Now Zealand Kifle Club's Association waited upon the General Officer Commanding the NewZealand Forces (Major-Geueral 'A. J. Godley, C.8.) yesterday with reference to various matters affecting'tho interests of riilo club men and their sport. Tho principal mailers dealt with were tho issue of rifles and t.lia question of railway parses for district prize meetings. In reply to the deputation, tho General pointed out with regard to the issue of rifles that it was essential that the equipment of the territorial force should be given first consideration. He counselled patience. As soon as the new scheme had been got v;ell nndor way, tho.. rifle, clubs would find that their interests would not be neglcetcd. Tho position with regard to the railway passes was that a vote of .Coflfl had been placed on the Supplementary Estimates for that purpose, the Wellington district's share being .£125.
The Harbour Board has been successful in negotiating a loan of .£50,000 at 4 per ccnt. at par, tho interest payable and tho principal repayable in Wellington. Tho chairman, in formally reporting the flotation to tho board last night, said that in his opinion the loan had been arranged on most satisfactory terms, and it was, he thonght, one of tho best local loans that had been raised in New Zealand.
It is expeetcd that tho re-issue of arms to tho territorial forces will be proceeded with in the course of the next few weeks, and that territorial soldiers desirous of taking part ill week-end rifle sport will bo able to do so this side of Christmas.
Whether election day and second ballot day should be declared holidays from noon for vjliarf employees was discussed ),v tho Harbour Board last night. Tho Wharves Committee recommended that, following the practice of previous years, tho days should bo observed as holidays. An objection was raised on tho ground that it was not wise to prevent from workin" men who were anxious to cam their living. In any case men would bo working, so that tho object of the Act would bo°niore or less defeated- Tho only deference would be that they would receivo overtime rates. The recommendation was rejected, but a motion that work on til" wharves cease between twelve noon and 2 p-m. on those days iyqs carried. Mr. C. W. Palmer, secretary of the Wellington branch of tho Navy League, hn« just returned from Auckland, and, while in the northern city, made arrangements for the Navy League demonstration o.ud reception of Admiral King-Hall.
