CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
■ BIG SCHEMES AT AUCKLAND. (By Tclecraph.— Press Association I Auckland, November 8. The biggest scheme of city improvements that has been undertaken for many years has now been definitely agreed upon between the Auckland Harbour Board and the Railway Department. The boar'.! has agreed to undertake the reclamation of 32 acres at Mechanic's Bay at the Department's expense for the extension of goods yards. Besides tho actual reclamation, tho scheme involves a number of highly important features. Ono of tho most salient of these is that tho whole of tho triangular block of buildings, covering seven acres of the old reclamation between Beach Eoad and the Iving's Drive, will be swept away, and tho area will bo taken over by the Railway Department. Tho King's Drive, running along the existing waterfront from the engine shwls, will also bo closed, and its area, aggregating three acres, vrilt be thrown into the new goods yards. By these provisions the. Department's yard spaco will l;e more than doubled, comprising 44 acres in place of IS acres at present, and lha area will bo unbroken, and, therefore, more readily worked. Thi> lessees will he duly compensated by the Department for the loss of their buildings. Apart from the extension of the goods yards ,and the exchanges with the lessees, Hid scheme enables tho carrying out of another city improvement—tho extension of Quay Street.
