CRICKET SEASON OPENS.
A BURNING QUESTION. Cricketers came out in fair numbers rn Saturday. Tho weather was glorious and a good afternoon at practice was spent. Tho Basin Reserve was well patronised by knights of the willow, tho clubs represented being Wellington East, Wellington Central, Wellington South, St. Mark's, and another. Grounds about the city claimed their share of enthusiasts in the summer pastime. Tho nets will be up almost every evening now till tho competitions start, and players will thus have fair opportunity of striking form before- matches begun. Naturally the proposed levy to set the finances of tho association on a better footing was discussed a good deal by players, and opinions were various, and not very definite. It was, however, generally conceded that cricketers must do something to help themselves, but what is still in nubibus. Tho fact seems to bo that the coming general meeting must give a strong clear lead in some direction. If it should by some mischanco fail to do so tho position will bo a grave one, for the financial axe has now been laid very close to the root of the cricket tree.
