ASSOCIATION

SWIFTS WIN EASILY. AN UNPLEASANT EPISODE. Interest in Association football as far as local games are concerned is on the wane. It is getting near the euil of tho season, and Swifts, by defeating Corinthians bv such a margin of points on Saturday, are prettv well certain to win the double. Tho other two matches played were between Rovers and IJiamonds, and Ramblers and Y.M.uA. Some little surprise was occasioned w;h=n it was learned that Y.M.C.A. had lowered Eamblers' colours at Kelhuriic. ■•; Next Saturday all senior cup competitions will bo suspended, for on that day Wellington's chosen eleven do battle against Canterbury at Cliristclturch for tho much-coveted Brown Shield. Mr. J. Parker, of Otago, has been appointed referee for the game. Eefereo Godber had an unpleasant duty to perform ou Saturday in the SwiftsCorinthians match when he ordered Ives, Corinthian's centre-forward, off the field for having, it was alleged, struck nn opponent'. The following are the results of Saturday's games ;— Y.M.C.A 2 Ramblers 1 Swifts' 7 Corinthians 0 Rovers '3 Diamonds 2 ramblers-y.m.c;a. Last week it will be remembered the match between Y.M.C.A. and Eamblers resulted in a draw after additional time had been played. A decisive game was played at Kelburne on Saturday, but tho play was of a very scrappy and uneven character, Rambler's being undoubtedly off colour. Shortly after commencing, Phillips (Y.M.C.A.) on receiving a nice pass raced between Eamblers' backs and registered the first score with a well-placed shot. Eamblers made frequent attempts to equalise, but the sliooting of tho front rank left much to be desired. With the •change of ends Eamblers still pressed, and were awarded a free-kick, which Gibson cleared nicely but Eoutlege returned to Hart, who essayed to score, but at the critical moment he over-ran the ball, and a throw-in resulted. Y.M.C.A. now transferred play to Eamblers' goal-mouth, but their attack was short-lived. Cross (Uamblers) passed to Gibson, who raced down 'tho wing, and after feinting prettily sent in the equaliser which gave Hollis no chance. Y.M.C.A.'s centre-half was ever a thorn in li.-nnblers' side, and one o) tho best men on tho field. The game was now more interesting, as it was anyone's game up to the present. However, shortly before time, Phillip's (Y.M.C.A.) was conspicuous in a fine individual effort. 110 -received in .mid-field, made straight for the posts, and, after out-manoeuvring the opposing defence, scored the winning goal.

SWIFT'S-CORINTHIANS. It was expected that the meeting of thcso two. loams would provide a good alternoou's sport, but folk were doomed to disappointment. To use the words of a spectator it was "simply a cake-walk for tho Keds." At various stages of tho game tho play was very rough, ami several minor accidents occurred, llarnslpy, of the Corinthians eleven, as compelled to leave tho lield disabled, and then Ives, tho mainstay of the team, was ordered off for alleged foul play. These adverse happenings appeared to take the lifo out of the Black ami Whites, and the Maroons wero thus enabled to rattle on seven s goals in the 93-minutes of play. Tho scoring account was opened by Scott after tho ball had been prettily transferred from tho other end of tho field bv Vcssev, Eoberts and the tricky outside-left. Tho game wa.<! fast and open all through. Swifts played with rare combination, and tho deienco of tho opposing team not being strong, thus it was more pronounced than in former matches. Corinthians gavo Swifts an anxious time at various stages of tho play, but good defensivo work saved the situation. .Roberts netted goal No. 2, and Scott and Guiso also took a band at scoring, making tho total 4 goals to nil at half-time. During tho second spell, Swifts seemed to settle down to tho game, and tako things calmly. Thoy kept tho game well in hand; right up to the finish, and when Mr. Godber, tho referee, had blown for time, three more goals had been added to Swifts' total, the scorers being Scott, Guise, and Eoberts.

ROVERS-DIAMONDS. This match, was played at the Dnppa Ptreet Keserve, and resulted in a win for Eovers bv three goals to two. There were not many'points of. difference between the two teams, their tactics and strength bein" very similar. Eovers were rather we°ak on defence, but they played with mora combination. As an exhibition of "soccer" the game was disappointing— the playors on each side seemed to prefer individual effort to combination. Hovers drew first blood through the agency of Lowe and in a short time Diamonds equalised matters. Play hovered around the half-way line for some time, and then Eovers tried their hand at attacking, and were successful, Miller shooting tho ball through the posts. Diamonds come down tho field with some splendid passing rushes, and by dint of persistent attack scored a goal, Black shooting Hie ball through. When the whistle sounded for kalf-tihio honours were easy, each side having scored two goals. Tho second spell began inauspiciotisly, although play was fast and open. Diamonds became aggressive, and for a few minutes gave their opponents plenty to think about. Just when a goal seemed likely tho Eover forwards broke away, and "after a-good rush down the field Miller shot a goal which gave his eido tho lead. Diamonds then mado great efforts to at least draw level, but although they were within an aco of scoring several times Eovers eventually left the field the victors.

MANAWATU FINAL, A CURIOUS TERMINATION. Oil/ TfleerauK—Special Correspondent.! Palmerston North, September 9. The final for the Manawatu Football Association championship between Jackcytown and Bangers was played to-day, I>us ended indecisively, owing to a peculiar circumstance. When time- was called the teams were equal, each side having scored a goal; and it was decided to play two quarter-hour spells. Before the first spell concluded the ball burst. Another was procured, but just near the conclusion of the second spell that one also suffered ho fate of-the predecessor, ami the game had to be abandoned, because there was not another. It will probably be replayed next Saturday.
