KAIKOURA REPORTED. Advice received by the local agonts> for Ihe New Zealand Shipping Company states that the Kailtoura, which is en route from London to Lyttelton, left Colombo ou September 4 for Ropkhampton, Townsville, and Port Chalmers.
KARAMEA FROM MONTREAL. Yesterday evening the New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Karamea arrived at Wellington from Montreal, via way ports. Montreal was left on Juno 30, the vessel having on board 7COO tons of general cargo. Melbourne was reached on August 14, thence Sydney and Auckland. Upon completion of discharge at, New Zealand ports the Knramea's charter with the New Zealand Shippiuc Company expires, and the vessel sails for Australia imaer the Shaw-Savill Hag. Brisbane will he the first port of call iu Australia, and there Homeward loading will bo commenced. Captain W. P. Cliftou-Mogg is still in command, and he ba-s- associated with him the following officers:--Chief, Mr. A. ]!. Roberts; second, Mr. K. J. Manners: third. Mr. T. W. Jones; fourth, Mr. It. C. Milliard. Mr. R. Finlayson is chief engineer, Mr. Marmiou second, Mr. M'Kenzic third, Mr. M'Adam fourth, and Mr. Smith fifth. Sir. D. Dunn is chief refrigerator, and lir. S. Loftus second, while Mr. Bennett is boilermaker, and Mr. Walsh chief steward.
CAPE ORTEGAL FROM NEW YORK. On Saturday afternoon tho steamer Cape Ortcgal arrived at Wellington from New York, via way ports. She is running under the auspices of the Tyser Line, and is quite a. new vessel, this being her first. vi«it. to these parts. Russell and Co., of Port Glasgow, built the Cape Orteg.il for the Lvlc Shipping Company, and launched her in the early part of the present year. She has a. carrying rapacity of 8250 tons dead weight, and is fitted with the latest improvements for the rapid handling of cargo. She is of the well-deck type, having five spacious holds with two winches to each hatch. Her engines arc of the tripleexpansion type, and develop a speed of 12 knots an hour. The Capo Ortega I left New York on June 17, fine weather generally being met with, with the exception of a. severe gale of six days' duration, while she was between Capo Town and Melbourne. Captain A. Warden is in command, and his officers arc: Chief, Mr. J. D. Milner; second, Mr. J. Irvine; third. Mr, S. Crouch. Mr. W. Saxclby is chief engineer. Mr. It. P. Cool; second. Mr. T. Hunter third, and Mr. T. Hubbard fourth. Tho steamer is manned by British sailors, with Chinese firemen and stewards, the crew numbering 38 all told. Upon completion of discharge of her cargo at Diinedin. the Capo Ortcgal proceeds to Newcastle to load coal for tho West Coast of South America on timo charter,
Captain J. F. Crawford, of the Alua, is giving up the sea to take up tho position of second pilot at Lyttclton. Captain li. .li. Smith (lata of the Jlokoia), who recently retired from the sea, will take command of the Atua until an appointment, is made. Mr. Tlenry, second engineer of the Kittawa, has rejoined the vessel after holiday leave. Mr. M'Pherson, who has been acting as second, resumes his old position as third. Mr. Iloughton, who has hecn acting as third, has gone south for orders. The Kairaki sails for Karauiea this afternoon. Duo here on or about October 2 fi'oin Liverpool, via way ports, tho JVU.-S. steamer Kent is bringing 9COO tons of cargo for New Zealand, 2500 tons of which are for Wellington. ■ ' '' ■An expected arrival in port on Friday next is the Chatham Islands Fishing Company's steamer Himitangi, from tho Chatham:, via Lyttclton. Mr. Vilo has joined the Alexander as second mate, vice Mr. fi. White, resigned. An arrival in port at 10.45 a.m. on Satr ttrday was the ketch Lizzie Taylor. The passage up from Timaru was a good one, light variable winds being experienced. The Lizzie Taylor brought 116 tons of produce, aud leaves Wellington to-morrow for Havelock,- where sho loads timber' for Timaru, To-day both the To Anau and tho Haupiri are expected to clear Wellington for Wcstport. The latter vessel comes back to Wellington on Wednesday aud leaves for Auckland, via East Coast bays aud ports, on Thursday.
